Final Exams

The information below is for current Science students only.
We encourage students to make efforts to complete final exams as scheduled.

Missed Final Exams

Deferred final exam applications (completed through the student's home faculty office) are for students who are affected the day of the exam. For special cases, there is the possibility of an advanced deferred exam. Please review the table below to learn more about your options.

Note: Deferring your final exam is serious. Students with two or more deferred exams outstanding from a previous term may be required to reduce the number of courses in which they are registered.

Deferred Final exam request

You should contact us, within two working days after the missed final exam.

Excluding the final exam, students must have attempted at least half of the assigned work to be eligible to apply for a deferred exam.

As per the Absence from Final Exams section of the University Calendar, deferred exams are not granted automatically and will be considered only in the case of:

  1. incapacitating mental and/or physical illness
  2. severe domestic affliction
  3. for circumstances as described in the University’s Discrimination and Harassment Policy and Accommodation Policy (including religious belief)
  • Deferred final exam applications cannot be submitted until after the final exam has taken place.
  • Deferred final exams are not guaranteed. It’s important to understand the rules and potential consequences, and be prepared to submit supporting documentation.

Advance Deferred Final Exam request

You must contact us as soon as you are aware of the conflict.

Excluding the final exam, students must have attempted at least half of the assigned work to be eligible to apply for an advance deferred exam.

As per the Absence from Final Exams section of the University Calendar, consideration may be made for final exam deferral requests submitted before the scheduled date of the exam when the circumstances are for acceptable and verifiable reasons known in advance (e.g., scheduled surgery, funeral).

  1. Supporting documentation will be required.
  2. You must write the exam on the scheduled deferred exam date as shown in your syllabus.
  • Be aware that students who apply for a final exam deferral ahead of the exam, may not receive approval ahead of their exam time.
  • Deferred final exams that are granted in advance of the scheduled final exam must NOT be treated as a rescheduled final exam. Students must write the deferred final on the time and date as set by the instructor or by mutual agreement. For details see the Deferred Final examination section of the calendar

Special Deferred Exam request

Contact the Faculty of Science Student Service Office to apply for a Special Deferred Exam.

As per the Deferred Final Exam section of the University Calendar, students who have applied for a deferred final exam, but who have, for justifiable cause, not written the deferred exam on the scheduled date must reapply for a second and final opportunity to write the deferred exam.

  • Once set, the date for a second deferral is final and applications for further deferrals will not be considered or accepted.

Special deferred finals are extremely rare in cases of atypical situations (e.g., long hospital stay).

Exam dates for special deferreds may not be immediate and your final grade will remain Incomplete and a notation will be added.

Any outstanding grade that is left unresolved will impact future course registration. It will also result in a delay in your academic standing review, graduation application or any admission applications in progress.

Reexaminations

Reexaminations are not normally permitted in the Faculty of Science. Students seeking a reexamination for a course offered by the Faculty of Science must, in addition to meeting the requirements set out in Reexaminations, also meet the following conditions:

  1. Students must provide evidence of a medical condition or similarly compelling circumstance existing at the time of the writing of the final examination
  2. provide evidence that the student’s performance in the final examination was so affected by circumstances as shown in (1) that there was a substantial difference between the final examination results and the term work
  3. excluding the final exam, must have completed at least one-half of the term work

Rescheduled exam

Students who have three exams held in four consecutive time blocks, may be eligible to reschedule one of those exams. Note: These situations are rare. See the Office of the Registrar page for all details.
