Revised Tri-Agency Open Access Policy (2026)
Copyright Office - 26 October 2026
On October 5, 2026, the Government of Canada’s major research funding agencies, CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC (Tri-Agency), announced a revised Open Access Policy. This policy states that all peer-reviewed research articles based on research funding that is awarded on or after January 1, 2027 must be made freely available in a Canadian institutional repository or on a trusted Canadian platform immediately, at the date of publication (i.e., no embargoes).
The revised Open Access Policy and related FAQ are available on the Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications (2026) page. U of A researchers seeking information or guidance related to publishing open access and funding agency mandates should consult the Library's Publishing Open Access guide.
