Safety Day

Safety Day is an annual event at the University of Alberta intended to foster a university-wide conversation on safety. Launched as a Culture of Care initiative in 2024, the event is facilitated by leaders across the institution and highlights the importance of safety within each respective work environment. Safety Day occurs each May during National Safety and Health Week.

Safety Day 2026

This year, the U of A will celebrate Safety Day on Wednesday, May 6. The theme of Safety Day 2026 is Safety Starts With Us!, reflecting the key goals of the day:

  • to celebrate improved health and safety practices at the U of A
  • to engage workers on safety topics
  • to empower supervisors to reflect on current health and safety practices in their unit

Activities + Events

The following activities and events are planned for Safety Day. Supervisors, staff and students are encouraged to participate as much as possible!

Safety Self-Assessment

All supervisors, including principal investigators, are encouraged to schedule a 45-minute Safety Self-Assessment with their direct reports to conduct a guided discussion around the current state of the team's safety culture. We encourage supervisors and their teams to complete and submit the assessment form between May 6 and May 22.
