PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) HIV medication
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a preventive health service offered to HIV-negative individuals who may be at increased risk of HIV exposure. The service includes medical assessment, prescription, and ongoing monitoring by a physician who prescribes PrEP,. PrEP consists of a daily oral medication (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine) that works by preventing the HIV virus from replicating in the body if exposure occurs.
As part of the service, patients receive education on PrEP use, safer sex practices, adherence support, and routine follow-up care, including regular HIV testing, kidney function monitoring, and screening for sexually transmitted infections. Coverage and costs may vary depending on provincial health insurance and individual benefit plans, with options available for students, staff, and individuals without insurance.
