For Host Supervisors

This research scholarship program provides opportunities for a select few visiting international students from UTEC (University of Engineering and Technology in Lima, Peru) to perform research under faculty member supervision and mentorship while at the University of Alberta. This research should have strategic value for the partnership between University of Alberta and UTEC, which most often aligns for research projects affiliated with U of A's Faculty of Engineering.

Typically the 4-month scholarship period is from September 1 through December 31, which aligns with U of A's Fall semester. Tthese visiting researchers are considered academic visitors during their stay and will be registered as guests, not students or staff, during their stay on campus at the University of Alberta. Host Supervisor Responsibilities

University of Alberta faculty members are kindly requested to provide a letter confirming willingness to host the candidate that references the research project as well as details on the expected outcome and/or prospective cooperation in the future. A template may be provided upon request.

Once the participant has arrived on campus, host supervisors are asked to provide access to appropriate research facilities and to act as a mentor for the duration of the participant’s stay.

No contribution of award funds is required from the host professor, and the academic visitor invitation process and campus registration activities will be handled by ISVS staff. Please keep reading below for details.

Responsibilities of University of Alberta's International Student & Visitor Services (ISVS)

The Inbound International Internship Coordinator will liaise with our partners at UTEC to notify the selected recipients of this scholarship. After acceptance of the scholarship, candidates will be formally invited to the University of Alberta.

ISVS staff are then responsible for directly facilitating the formal invitation letter and immigration application process for the visiting researcher on behalf of the U of A host professor.

ISVS staff will consult with our colleagues in HR Immigration Services about the most appropriate way to invite the academic visitor, and may proceed with submitting the Foreign Visitor Category Assessment for any research intern as necessary. Host professors will be included in any emails with updates regarding these procedures.

These visiting international students will be instructed by ISVS staff on how to obtain the proper immigration documents to perform research, or work (not study), in Canada.

The appropriate category for a visiting research individual's invitation will be determined  on an ad-hoc basis and confirmed with all parties after nomination/application, as it can depend on individual factors as well such as which passport the visiting researcher will be travelling under, where they are applying from or arriving from, etc.
